The two of them try to find Cedric to use magic to fix the window, who uses this as an opportunity to steal Sofia's amulet using a summoning spell, but it backfires and he gets pulled into the window instead. A merboy named Fluke becomes jealous of Sofia for receiving so much attention because of her heroics during her last visit. However, Sofia realizes that she will continue to relive her birthday until she has a truly happy birthday. The girls and the carpet seek directions from a fortune-teller who tells them to go south to the Hanging Gardens, past a stand that sells kebabs, and finally to follow the Elephant River until it meets the mountain to get to Tangu Peak. After both of them are rescued from a chasm by the trolls, King Roland understands the truth and listens to his daughter, removing the law and allowing the trolls to go up to the surface to see the stars. In the process, Sofia helps to change the judgment of her friend, Jade, who refuses to believe that the newly-good little witch means well. A group of pranksters from Hexly Halls play a prank as part of a tradition.
After a few unsuccessful attempts to take Sofia's amulet, she confides in her sister about her predicament, and Sofia generously gives it to Amber. At the stables, she befriends a mini purple horse named Minimus, who is looked down upon due to his small size and lack of wing power. Sofia talks to Baileywick, who agrees to let her do the next project by herself: flower-gathering. Meanwhile, Sir Oliver tries to ruin the event in revenge for his banishment. By the end of the day, Baileywick did not get to enjoy a single hour of his day off, much to the children's guilt. Sofia sacrifices the vanity put upon her to help the librarian, who turns out to be Fauna in disguise, leading to Sofia getting her first trophy. The twins celebrate their birthday together, with Amber knowing how special it is than ever to have this special bond.
When he fails at impressing King Roland by messing up one of his spells, he manages to change Sofia back into human form after she accidentally knocks over a potion that turns her into a lizard. After Sofia slides into the hockey net, Flora and Sir Henley decide that sharing the rink isn't a good idea. Then Amber demands to go with Sofia to the , where she has to stop an Evil Crystalmaster from covering the Isles in magic crystals. Feeling a little bad for Aunt Tilly, Sofia decides to stay while the twins run off to the carnival. She ultimately decides to take Ginger instead, which hurts Clover's feelings and self-esteem. As Amber attempts to remake Sofia's tea party, things get complicated as Sofia tries to follow Amber's suggestions to throw a fancy tea party that can impress her royal schoolmates. Roland tells Sofia the story of how he picked the amulet as a gift for her, remembering the stories of how it would always watch over the one who wore it, and felt that that was something she needed with the stresses of royal life to deal with. Cedric accompanies the Buttercups on their field trip, and Sofia offers to help him earn his father's respect and the family wand. This proves conflicting for Sofia as Sir Dax wants to scare all the people out and keep all the ghosts in. Although he gave his word, Baileywick overhears Ruby's mother's warning about touching poisonous plants, and tries to help Sofia. Cora finally trusts Sofia and they rescue Oona using the Mermaid Comb, which Cora knows how to use, and Clover and the seagull's help, while Sven enlists his humongous family to stall Emily from letting the storm progress. To keep practicing, Hugo invites Sofia to his castle, so they can practice in his outdoor ice rink. The trail is too steep for Baileywick, with his swollen feet, to walk, so the troop builds a makeshift sled with wood, twine and some princess supplies he brought.
They are greeted by Cedric's old teacher Grimtrix the Good. Sassafras heads back to her home with Barley, and once the coachman repairs the broken wheel, Sofia and Clover return to the castle. He embraces his son's passion for ice-dancing by asking to become an assistant ice-dancing coach, and Hugo's friends are so impressed with his performance that they want him to teach them how to ice-dance, too, only to have more trouble than Sofia did. Unfortunately, the spell throws mother and daughter in a boat on a rapidly raging river, leading to Sofia realizing that she must accept that things are the way they are because they have to be the way they are. After searching for a long time, Sofia comes across a wagon with Madam Ubetcha, a fortune-teller that looks and acts exactly like the one she and Amber met at Tangu.
Meanwhile, Clover makes friends with her dragon Crackle. During ice-dancing, Flora announces that the class will put on an ice-dancing recital, which is at the same time as Hugo's hockey practice much to his relief. Cedric gives her some magic crystals that will conjure a beautiful butterfly costume, but his true intention is to steal Sofia's amulet. Sofia and Hugo decide to perform a duet, and Hugo helps Sofia with her ice-dancing in the process. Meanwhile, Clover eats an enchanted Liking Berry in the new castle's enchanted garden and falls head over heels for Crackle, which starts to creep her out.
While playing pirate on James' treehouse, the mast of the ship breaks, and Baileywick returns per James' calling to fix it up, missing his ride to the apple orchard. In addition to Sofia's princess lessons, she is also given the Magic Amulet of Avalor. When James and Amber tell Sofia all about the circus, she tells them in turn about the fun adventure she had — one she would never forget. It's up to Sofia and Minimus to rescue Mazzimo and grant him his one wish: to be free. As the recital starts, Sofia goes off to hockey practice and finally convinces Hugo to tell his father the truth.
